BUSINESS MANAGER’S REPORT

As we begin 2008, we look back to 2007 when we continued to promote our legislative initiatives as well as the advocacy of future projects that will provide work opportunities for our membership for years to come.

Jim Reed, our Financial Secretary-Treasurer has retired this past February 1st. I would like to thank Jim for his almost 23 years of service to Local 322. When Jim first took office we were a lot smaller operation in Westville without a computer or a fax machine. With Jim’s help we have become one of the most automated operations of our kind in the region. We also have a very healthy general fund and we own our facility free and clear thanks to Jim’s leadership.

On a personal note, I consider Jim a friend, someone I could always count on. I wish Tom Page all the best. Granted, he has big shoes to fill but I look forward to working with him to provide the best possible service to our membership.

From a legislative stand point, 2007 was another good year for us. We were able to initiate legislation that will help our industry. Some examples are as follows:

1. A-3889 prohibits debarred contractors from setting up a new company or to have any financial interest in a company that performs any public work.

2. A-3890 authorizes the payment of prevailing wages on leased properties by a public entity.

3. A-4009 establishes criminal penalties for contractors who knowingly classify full time employees as independent contractors to avoid state and federal taxes.

4. A-1016 licensing of HVAC contractors which will have constraints and restrictions similar to the plumbing license law which get some of the unscrupulous contractors off the street.

I would like to congratulate our members who success fully ran for office including Councilman Fred Green of Absecon, Councilman Greg Schenker of Folsom and Mayor Paul Medany of Dept ford. We appreciate their continued advocacy for working families and I encourage any member who may be interested in becoming involved in the political process to please contact me.

Our Veterans Memorial is now complete and we will have a formal dedication later this year. Commemorative bricks are available for veterans who are members of Local 322. Anyone interested should contact the Business Office for availability.

We took on several volunteer projects throughout the year to help the less fortunate in our community and were even part of the “Extreme Makeover” project with our new friends at Urban Prom-

We look forward to the start of the first “Mega” project (Revel Entertainment) in Atlantic City in a number of years which will be followed by several others that are planned.

I wish each member and their family a healthy and prosperous 2008.
