Frequently Asked Questions:
What is Construction
Management?
Construction Management is an
emerging profession in which an independent consultant often represents
the company owner on the design and construction team. Design
fundamentals and building systems are a key part of the curriculum, with
an emphasis on social and political concerns. Students also gain an
understanding of basic science, math, economics, project management and
business administration.
Do I have to be a student
enrolled in a Bachelor of Science degree program to participate?
No! Students may enroll as non-matriculated students with the intention
to only complete one or both certificate programs.
I completed my apprenticeship program can this be used
for college credit?
You bet! Local 322 apprenticeship programs have been evaluated and
students receive forty-two (42) credits towards a BS in Construction
Management after they have completed the two certificate programs. Even
if you have had no previous college credit you would be almost half-way
toward completing a BS degree!
Does Local 322 financially support the Drexel University
Programs?
Of course! Local 322 and South Jersey Mechanical Contractors provide
financial support for the two certificate programs at various levels.
Contact your training director for specific details.
Where can I take my courses?
Anywhere you like! You may take courses on-site at any of the PACA
training centers participating in the program.
I am concerned about competing for "grades"
but I want the knowledge!
Don't worry! You may take one or all of your certificate courses
pass/fail just inform the instructor by the third class session.
NOTE: A pass/fail class can not be used for a
degree program but is permissible to be used for certificate programs.
I haven't taken any college courses. Can I still enroll?
Yes! A high school diploma or GED. and five years work experience
normally qualify for non-matriculated status.
I have previously attended college but didn't finish my
degree program. Can these credits be applied to BS Program?
It's easy! Make an appointment with a college counselor and all of
your credits will be evaluated towards a degree.
I attend college but withdrew because of poor grades.
Can I still participate?
Why not! The Educational philosophy of the College of Evening and
Professional Studies is to provide a "second chance" to adults
seeking to come back to college.
Certificate Program
The College of Evening and Professional Studies (CoEPS) offers
Certificate Programs in Construction Management. The certificate program
is a two-year program and courses taken are directly applicable to the
undergraduate degree. A student may earn a certificate in
"Fundamentals of Construction" after only six courses (18
credits). The certificate in "Construction Management" is
awarded upon the completion of an additional six courses for a total of
thirty-six credits.
Bachelor's Program Course Work
The B.S. degree program has been growing since 1975. B.S. students
must also take humanities course work and may select from a wide range
of subjects in the social sciences. The curriculum in Construction
Management provides an interdisciplinary education consisting of a core
of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and materials and structural
behavior, followed by courses in business administration, architecture,
and structural systems as well as construction methods.
Faculty
The teaching staff is composed of full-time and adjunct faculty
members with expertise in construction, engineering, management,
architecture and law. Many are senior executives in construction firms.
